Of all the land mammals, the African Elephant is the largest. They live in large clans that branches out into smaller families, the oldest and largest female elephant is the matriarch who leads the whole clan in search for food and water. African elephants will spend up to 16 hours a day searching for grass, tree limbs, fruits and vines. They are known for their trunk which they are highly dependent of, it is very flexible and used for communication using touch and smell. Female stay with their mother until they're ready to have calves, and males stay with their mothers for up to 12 years, until they break off to live with other males in 'bachelor' herds.
